The shared destination
All four ingredients ultimately aim to increase the amount of nitric oxide the body produces, supporting healthy blood vessel function. But “aiming for the same destination” and “taking the same route” are different things.
Route one: direct arginine supply
L-Arginine is the direct substrate nitric oxide synthase converts into nitric oxide. Taken orally, though, a meaningful portion is broken down by the enzyme arginase in the intestine and liver before reaching general circulation.
Route two: buffered arginine
L-Arginine AKG 2:1 bonds arginine to alpha-ketoglutarate, a compound involved in cellular energy metabolism. This buffered form is included as an additional arginine source, potentially with somewhat different absorption characteristics than standard arginine.
Routes three and four: citrulline conversion
L-Citrulline HCL and L-Citrulline Malate both convert to arginine primarily in the kidneys — a pathway that substantially bypasses the liver's first-pass breakdown of arginine taken directly. This is often a more efficient way to raise blood arginine levels than supplying arginine alone, which is why citrulline has become increasingly favoured in circulation-focused formulas.
What this does not resolve
Because exact amounts are not disclosed, it is not possible to know how much of each source is actually present, or whether the combined total reaches doses shown effective in research on any individual ingredient.
